Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on X that India’s electronics exports rose by over 47 per cent in the first quarter of 2025-26 compared to the same quarter last year, reaching USD 12.4 billion. Goyal wrote that this strong growth shows the success of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, which has taken electronics production from USD 31 billion in 2014-15 to USD 133 billion in 2024-25.
The minister said that the government has built strong support systems to make India self-reliant in production. Because of this, the country has gone from only 2 mobile phone factories in 2014 to more than 300 today. He also highlighted India’s progress from being an importer of mobile phones to now becoming the world’s second-largest producer.
According to him, the electronics industry has opened many employment opportunities. Apart from mobile phones, items such as solar modules, networking products, charger adapters, and other electronic components are also boosting India’s export performance. Exports of electronic goods increased from ₹38,000 crore in 2014-15 to ₹3.27 lakh crore in 2024-25, showing more than an eightfold rise.
In 2014-15, only 26 per cent of the mobile phones sold in India were locally manufactured, while the rest were imported. Today, 99.2 per cent of mobile phones sold in the country are made within India.
The minister added that the value of mobile phone manufacturing has seen an enormous jump from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to ₹422,000 crore in FY24. This, he said, reflects the rapid expansion of the electronics sector and India’s strong position in global markets.
